That was the case for James, a 24-year-old volunteer from England who had already visited Olón and our school a few years ago. This time, he returned with the purpose of learning more about life in Ecuador. During his stay, he didn’t just teach English—he also learned Spanish, took surf lessons, joined in cultural activities, and lived with a local host family as a resident student.
In this interview, James shares his journey—what he gave, what he learned, and why Olón captured his heart. His story helps us understand what makes this corner of the world feel like a second home for so many.
How did you feel at Outdoor Ecuador?
From day one, James felt welcome. The staff already knew him, so he felt right at home and ready to get involved.
“Outdoor Ecuador is not just a school. It’s a place where every day is different—where students don’t just learn a language or a sport, but a way of life. I felt part of a family from the start. The team is full of energy and passion, and that really shines through to students and volunteers.”
What motivated you to join this volunteer program?
Many volunteers come to Olón looking for cultural exchange, and for James, it was also a way to give back while traveling.
“When Outdoor offered me this volunteer opportunity, I immediately thought it was a great way to exchange languages. I loved the idea of combining surfing with volunteering. Teaching English to the local community and to the lifeguard team, while living by the beach and being immersed in Ecuadorian culture—it just sounded perfect.”
How has your experience teaching English been Olón?
James found that teaching was a powerful way to connect with the local community.
“At first I was a bit nervous, but the students were very open and welcoming. It’s been fun, interesting, and definitely a challenge. The students are kind and eager to learn. Teaching English to the lifeguards was also a unique experience. It was amazing to see their progress with each lesson. I learned not just how to teach—but how to listen, be patient, and adapt to different learning styles. It was incredible!”
What have you learned while surfing and studying Spanish?
While teaching others, James was also a student himself.
“I had never surfed before, and it was hard at first. But just like in the classroom, progress comes with consistency. Surfing taught me to let go of control and enjoy the moment. And with Spanish, I learned that making mistakes is part of the process. Now I can have basic conversations and feel more connected with the locals.”
What do you love most about living in Olón?
For James, Olón represents a slower, more authentic and human way of life.
“What I love most is the beach—I get to surf every day. Learning to surf here has been incredible; the waves are perfect for all levels. During the week, the beach is quiet. You can read, eat, meet friends, and watch beautiful sunsets. I also love the town’s vibe—everyone greets each other, helps each other. There’s a real sense of community, which you don’t find in many places anymore. Plus, it feels very safe and peaceful—like home.”
How has the local community impacted you?
Beyond teaching, James built real connections with families, children, and local shop owners.
“Life here is authentic. People live in the moment, more relaxed and spontaneous. The lifestyle is simple—you enjoy your time, your food, nature, and yourself. People are super friendly and made me feel like part of the community. It’s a healthy life: lots of sunshine, no stress, and every moment feels meaningful and awesome.”
What has surfing taught you about yourself?
Many volunteers are surprised by how much they learn about themselves in the water. James was no exception.

“Surfing is magical. Having proper instruction helped me connect deeply with the ocean. The waves in Olón are soft, consistent, and accessible for all levels. Even though I’m still learning, surfing has become a way for me to feel more in tune with nature and with myself.”
What’s been your most memorable moment so far?
Every volunteer leaves with unforgettable memories. James shares one of his favorites:
“Honestly, every moment was special. While volunteering at the school and living in Olón, something was always going on. What I enjoyed the most was sharing Spanish and surf classes with new students who quickly became close friends. We had so many great experiences—watching stunning sunsets, going out to eat, taking surf trips, visiting The Jungle Clan, exploring the cacao farm, and doing so many other activities I loved. Every day brought something new.”
How does life here compare to life in England?
“Time feels different here. You’re more connected to nature, to others, and to yourself. You realize you don’t need much to be happy. I now value experiences more than material things. Being here, meeting people who become your travel companions—that’s truly special.”
What would you highlight about this experience to someone new?
James emphasizes that he never felt alone.
“If you’re looking for more than just a vacation, this experience is perfect. You get to integrate, contribute, learn, and live with purpose. The people at the school are super cool, everyone is friendly, and it’s easy to make new friends. Ivonne and Luis are chill and always supportive. Bruno and Leo are also amazing—they create such a good vibe, whether you’re surfing or going out. I always felt safe and welcomed by them.”
What advice would you give to future volunteers?
James shares a final message for those considering a similar journey:
“If you’re thinking about traveling to Ecuador and want to volunteer, I highly recommend staying at Outdoor Ecuador in Olón. It’s a wonderful experience—you meet amazing people and enjoy every moment to the fullest. I really love being here.”
